Markdown was inspired by email. It's a minimal way to format your text. The goal is to use "natural" formats, similar to email. Software that understands Markdown translates it to HTML. Markdown is much easier--and more forgiving--than HTML. This post has the markdown you'll use the most.

Useful! I learned basic html when I was in middle school and have just been sticking with that for the last 20 years, it's probably time to learn some of the newer more efficient methods lol.

Heh. Because for some purposes I still have to mark up in HTML (such as fixing ebook coding), I still haven't learned Markdown. It'd probably useful if I did.
